Terlingua Ghosts by Jann Alexander © 2012
The small town of Terlingua, Texas, near the Mexico border, is a former cinnabar-mining district, and known more famously today for its annual Chili Cook-Off. Terlingua Ghost Town, as it’s called now, is a tourist draw with its circa-early 1880s cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains a monument to the many former residents and miners who died during the 1918 influenza epidemic, or simply from the harsh mining conditions. They rest here in the peaceful desert in marked (and many unmarked) graves. ♣
