Are you possessed by color? For artist Paul Klee, the attraction to color and light was a turning point in his career. On his 1914 visit to Tunisia with abstract expressionists August Macke and Louis Molliet, he was so overwhelmed by the intense light there that he wrote:
“Color has taken possession of me; no longer do I have to chase after it, I know that it has hold of me forever. That is the significance of this blessed moment. Color and I are one. I am a painter.”
The effect, cites WebMuseum, Paris, was that he began to “build up compositions of colored squares that had the radiance of the mosaics” he’d seen during time spent in Italy.
